Throughout the process of leaving plastic in banana farming behind, Smurfit Kappa expanded its range with the launch of the BanaBag. This BanaBag is considered as a special and unique solution for organic bananas producers. Protecting the fruit from disease, insects, and other harmful factors such as overheating which can be caused from using plastic.
Additionally using this product, as stated by Louis Hesselholt: “… matches the needs of our plantation by reinforcing the organic characteristics of our export product and contributing to our goal of eliminating 100 percent of all contaminant plastic waste from our farms”.

From 2020 HHK has been trading plastic free produced biodynamic banana. This means a more sustainable method of production as there are now 140 hectares of bananas farms that are free from plastic! Meaning that there is a reduction of 308. 12 KILOS of plastic per hectar per year! And a total reduction of 43 139.2 Kg of plastic per year in all 140 hectares The plastic has been replaced by biodegradable FSC certified paper bags.
Additionally, unlike the plastic, the paper bags once used can later be reused for compost and to control the overgrowth of specific Gramineae. As well as, being recycled to being paper rope used to stabilize the banana trees against harsh winds. And unlike the plastic ropes, used the paper ropes are used and fall into the soil, they can also become compost. Removing the build up of plastic affecting the soil
All of this has been done to create a more sustainable method of production and to protect Mother Earth. We only have the one, and it is our job to maintain it for the future generations.
HHK has just obtained ASC and MSC certification, and therefore can offer our customers seafood from sustainable farming, ASC and sustainable fisheries, MSC.
From our “homefield” in Central America and from our office in Santa Marta Colombia, we can already offer large, great Vannamei shrimps from 5 of our oldest partners and suppliers, all of which are ASC certified. These are unique shrimps of the highest quality. Shrimps that are not medicated, and who are slowly pumped live directly into the factory, where they are either packed raw or boiled first.

HHK A / S has taken over the buildings at Aukionskaj 1-3 at the port of Strandby in the middle of spring. We are pleased to be able to take over this historic address from which for decades we have been commercializing in fishing and in business by talented people.
It was also in these premises that our grandfather auctioneer Magnus Hesselholt had his office and his daily walk at the harbor.
Our increased activities in Denmark and Europe have made it necessary to move into more space. From the nice new office space on the 1st floor, we have a great view of the harbor and all the way to Hirsholmene, which the company has taken its name from.
From now on, we now have optimal conditions for the further development of the company’s trading activities and managing the common features that concern our departments in Santiago Chile, Seattle USA, Santa Marta Colombia, and our department in Copenhagen.
